Each day as citizens of the world we are at a crossroads. The scope of our daily decisions leave a permanent footprint on the earth. I recently heard a fiercely simple and profound statement on NPR's This American Life:
"The more you know about a person, the harder it is to hate them."
This quote came from a beautiful patriot for peace and justice, an American entrepreneur with an uncommon notion to be a living voice for the change we seek. The man was Dal LaMagna, a seemingly unassuming multi-million dollar inventor of the Tweezor. Upon making his first million dollars, he ran for congress--and lost. Four years later he ran for the senate--and lost. His knowledge of international and domestic policies are limited, as is his political background. However, his resolve is so firmly unshakable, I had to write how deeply it affected me.
His plan was simple--end the violence in Iraq. He has gone about achieving this daunting, and seemingly unachievable task, by wanting to do something so elemental, we often forget about it--create a dialogue. He is working to single handedly reshape world events. Will he be successful?--maybe not. What is so important about his will to change is the drive and resolve which coincide with it. This country is in dire need of change, and we need a voice to help us achieve this. I am not advocating that Dal LaMangna is the man to do it, but the fact that he is willing to, is so important it is worthy of praise.
Why should you care? Here's why: We fight poverty, unaffordable and unattainable health care, an educational crisis, and a war less than 50% of Americans support, not to mention countless other issues. If you support the war in Iraq, GO WAVE A BANNER, if you don't support it, GO WAVE A BANNER. Repeatedly in the history of America and that of the world at large, revolution has taken new shape and sought new directions. What happened to college protests, million man marches in the streets, and leaders of a new generation as advocates for peace? How can we find new ways to make a change?
"If we can find money to kill people, we can find money to help people." --Tony Benn from Michael Moore's film "Sicko."
The resources are there--look at how I'm using them. Do I know as much about politics as you? --Probably not, but I have a website, so I'm going to VOICE MY OPINION. If you don't like it, you can leave. But tell me, if you leave, or even if you stay and read, what are you going to do about it? VOICE YOUR OPINION. Each day I find new ways to make my beliefs heard, and you should do the same. We must peacefully fight indifference, take to the streets in peaceful protest, write our congressmen, and work to support those which represent our ideological views.
Are you unemployed? Are you starving? Are you poor? Are you gay? Are this countries laws touching your body? Are you tired of Global Warming? Are you tired of War?
Be the change you seek.
